Wells Beach – 080712-15

On the BeachWe brought the metal detector to the beach, but didn’t have any luck finding anything. Probably the first problem is the beach is totally covered by high tide and buries stuff pretty deep. Also we might have had better luck down towards the main public beach instead of right outside the beach house where less people congregate.

After unsuccessfully searching parts of the beach, we took 2 quarters and attempted to retrieve them. I gave Robbie and Riley each one and told them to throw them into the water when the tide was rolling out. Riley tossed his about 8 feet out and I watched where it settled in the sand. After a few waves, it buried itself and I brought Riley over to the spot.

I showed him where it beeped and had him start to dig it up. Between a few waves and digging, he found his quarter. Robbie on the other hand whipped his quarter as far as he could into the deeper water, never to be seen or heard from again. Minus $.25 for the trouble. I did bury Riley’s quarter for him at one point, and Robbie dug it up.

I took Sarah over near the cement steps, since the boys were more fascinated with playing in the water anyways. A little ways out we found a promising target, but it was still well within where the tide was rolling in.  She couldn’t fast enough with the extra soupy sand caving in her hole, and a new wave rolling in every minute or two.

We ended up abandoning the beep, and didn’t go back when the sand dried up abit and the tide was out. I saw another kid with a metal detector one of the days, but he was just carrying it around on his shoulder. I never saw him use it or dig anything up…

Better luck next year at the beach, but hopefully we will be better at spotting and digging by then. Back to the back yard.
